Zithromax is an antibiotic, related to erythromycin, which fights bacteria and is used to treat a variety of bacterial ailments. Like Cipro, Zithromax combines a tablet and an oral suspension, or liquid, administration. The tablets come in two dose levels: 250 mg and 500 mg. The oral suspension comes in a powder form that is to be mixed with two ounces of water; it has a dose of 300 mg, 600 mg, 900 mg, or 1200 mg and comes in cherry, banana, or vanilla flavor.

Take Zithromax only as prescribed, and take it for the entire time it is prescribed, even if your symptoms seem to have disappeared. Take Zithromax on an empty stomach, either one hour before a meal or two hours afterwards; take a large glass of water with the tablet. Do not take any antacids that contain magnesium or aluminum for 2 hours before or after taking your treatment; these ingredients can lessen the treatment’s effect.

Normal side effects include nausea (vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation are all normal); headaches; dizziness, insomnia; slight itching (skin or vaginal); ringing in the ears; slight decrease in one’s sense of taste and/or smell.

Stop taking Zithromax immediately and get medical assistance if you experience any of the following side effects: watery, bloody, or clay-colored stool; chest pain; uneven heart beat; fever; sore throat; dark urine; loss of appetite; yellowing of the skin or eyes; headaches accompanied by a peeling or blistering rash.

Zithromax is not known to have any harmful effect on an unborn or nursing baby; if you are pregnant or may become pregnant in the course of your treatment, let your doctor know. Also tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, heart rhythm disorder, or a history of Long QT Syndrome. Do not take Zithromax if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, telithromycin, or troleandomycin. Many drugs can interact with Zithromax. Prepare a list of all medications you are taking, both prescription and over the counter, and even vitamin supplements, and show it to your doctor before starting Zithromax.
